Be an Ally. Support the Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-conforming Community (Preferably Before) November 6

The Senate race in Texas is going to be a matter of life and death to the Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-conforming Community. Of all the attacks Tr*mp has made on this community, his administration’s latest attack is the most heinous. This transphobic, anti-gay administration is actively trying to write trans folks out of civil rights. This administration is basically going to create a national genital registry because they wanna know what is in peoples’ pants that. fucking. bad. They are attempting to officially “define” gender as the “biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth,” which would effectively undo the Obama administration’s definition which was provided a more fluid, flexible definition. This act is is creepy and disgusting.
Defining “gender” is probably the most dangerous and offensive action being taken against the most vulnerable community in this country. One in four Trans people have been assaulted just because they are Trans. They suffer through physical and mental attacks from people and the government, and oftentimes can’t even receive adequate healthcare. 70% of Trans folk have reported receiving maltreatment, harassment, and violence from medical providers–a statistic that will worsen with this administration’s latest ploy. Obtaining a new ID with an updated gender marker already is a long arduous process that only adds to the cost of surgeries and doctors visits people are forced to go through in order to “prove” to a court that they are “certain” they want to make this ID update. On top of all of these requirements, each respective state has different laws in place that too often excuse medical maltreatment, refusal of service from state employees, and violence from abusive predators.
The severity of this latest attack can be compared to the action taken by the Justice Department on October 15, 2017, when DOJ attorneys were required to enforce legalized discrimination against Trans folks in the workplace. This administration also attacked Trans youth on February 22, 2017, when the Departments of Justice and Education decided that schools were not required to protect Trans students under Title IX. Like we’ve seen throughout history, violent and hateful rhetoric becomes violent and hateful actions. It’s up to all of us to declare that enough is enough and that Trans folks deserve better than what this administration has offered so far.
No matter the result of this November’s midterm elections, my trans friends and family will be resilient and strong. This election is going to be a matter of life and death to the Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-conforming Community here in Texas and beyond, but together, we can all continue to support and come out in defense of our friends, family and loved ones every single chance we get.
I will do my part for this community and you should, too. So many in the Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-conforming community can’t vote because they don’t have the money to pay for an updated ID or have received “elective” surgery to “prove” that they are “gendered” enough to get one. As capitalism and bigotry isolates this marginalized community even further, plan to vote as an ally and use your vote to support the Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-conforming community.
