Polling places are open from 7am to 7pm on Election Day.
Absentee Voting
To be qualified to vote via absentee ballot in Alabama, you must meet one of the following criteria:
- You will be absent from the state or county on Election Day.
- You are ill or have a physical disability that prevents a trip to the polling place.
- You are a registered Alabama voter who is temporarily living outside the county (such as a member of the armed forces, a voter employed outside of the United States, a college student, or a spouse or child of such a person).
- You are an appointed election officer or poll watcher at a polling place other than your regular polling place.
- You work a required shift – 10 hours or more – that coincides with polling hours.
- You are a caregiver for a family member confined to the home.
- You are incarcerated but otherwise eligible to vote.
You may qualify for an emergency absentee ballot if:
- You are required by an employer under unforeseen circumstances to be unavailable at the polls on the day of the election
- You are a caregiver of a person who requires emergency treatment by a licensed physician within five days before an election
- You have a family member die within five days before an election
- You have a medical emergency requiring treatment from a licensed physician within 5 days of an election.
Absentee ballots returned by mail must be received by noon on Election Day. If the absentee ballot is returned by hand to the Absentee Election Manager’s office, it must be delivered by the closing of business, but no later than 5pm, one day prior to the election. Only the voter may return the ballot.

There is no early voting, vote by mail, or in-person absentee voting in Alabama.
What do you need to bring to vote in person in Alabama?
Once you’re registered to vote, all you need to bring to your assigned polling place is a valid, up-to-date photo ID.
Acceptable Forms of Identification in Alabama:
- Alabama Driver’s License (not expired or has been expired for less than 60 days)
- Alabama Non-driver ID (not expired or has been expired for less than 60 days)
- Alabama Photo Voter ID Card

- State-issued ID (from Alabama or any other state)
- Alabama Dept. of Corrections Release Temporary ID (Photo required)
- Alabama Movement/Booking Sheet from Prison/Jail System (Photo required)
- Pistol Permit (Photo required)
- Driver’s License Issued by Another State
- Federal-Issued ID
- US Passport
- Employee ID from Federal Government, State of Alabama, Alabama County, Alabama Municipality, Alabama Board, or other entity of this state
- Student ID from a Public or Private University in the state of Alabama or a state institution of higher learning in any other state
- Employee ID from a Public or Private University in Alabama or a state college or university in any other state
- Military ID
- Tribal ID
If you do not have a valid Photo ID when you go to your assigned polling place:
- If 2 election officials can positively identify you, the officials can state this in a sworn affidavit so that you can cast a regular ballot.
- You may cast a provisional ballot. After casting your provisional ballot, you will have until 5 pm on the Friday after the election to submit a valid photo ID. Otherwise, the ballot will not be counted. You can check the status of your provisional ballot here.
