URGE Statement Supreme Court Hearing Chiles v. Salazar Oral Arguments

Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for the Chiles v. Salazar case. While the case focuses on Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy, its outcome will have major implications for similar laws across the country.

In response, Kimberly Inez McGuire, Executive Director of URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, said:

“As the Supreme Court hears Chiles v Salazar today, we stand firmly with the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado and across the nation, whose safety, dignity, and freedom are at stake. This case is not just about policy; it’s about the right of all people to live freely and authentically, without being subjected to harmful practices disguised as therapy.

So called “conversion therapy” is not therapy. It’s a dangerous and discredited practice rooted in shame and control. Every major medical and mental health organization has condemned its use because it inflicts serious harm—particularly on young people, trans and nonbinary youth, and those who are already marginalized by racism, ableism, or poverty. States have a responsibility to protect people from predatory practices that violate professional ethics and laws like the one in Colorado represent the bare minimum: a refusal to allow licensed professionals to weaponize their power against people they are meant to help.

We reject any argument that tries to use “free speech” or “religious freedom” as a shield for abuse. Real freedom includes the ability to live safely and authentically, without fear of being erased. As this case moves forward, we recommit ourselves to a vision of justice where LGBTQ+ lives are celebrated, where care is grounded in truth and compassion, and where every person has a right to exist fully, without fear of harm disguised as care.”
