Statement from URGE on Supreme Court’s Ruling on U.S. vs. Skrmetti

Statement from Kimberly Inez McGuire, Executive Director of URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, on the Supreme Court’s upholding of the Tennessee gender-affirming care ban:

“We are outraged.

Today, the Supreme Court chose cruelty over care—denying transgender youth the medical treatment they need to live safe, healthy, and affirmed lives. This decision upholds a dangerous and deeply unjust law that strips families of their rights, criminalizes love and support, and puts the lives of young people at risk.

Let’s be clear: gender-affirming care is lifesaving medical care. It is backed by every major medical organization in this country. It is care that allows trans youth to breathe, to grow, to exist as their full, authentic selves. And now, because of this ruling, more than 3,000 trans youth in Tennessee—and countless more across the country—are being told they don’t matter.

This is a direct attack on bodily autonomy, on parental rights, and on the fundamental freedom to control our own lives and make our own health care decisions. It is an attack on love, truth, and dignity.

But trans youth are powerful. Their families are resilient. And we will not back down.

We envision a future where gender-affirming care is accessible, affordable, and free from shame or stigma. A future where all young people—no matter their identity or where they live—can thrive and live authentically and with dignity.

To every trans young person: We see you. We love you. We will never stop fighting for you.”
