Cleveland State University Starts URGE Chapter

A new chapter has formed at Cleveland State University in Ohio!  They are gaining traction and have been approved as a registered student group on campus.  The student newspaper also wrote a feature about the creation of an URGE chapter at CSU and interviewed chapter leader Marissa Pappas about URGE and her experience at the Ohio Reproductive Justice Leadership Institute back in November.  URGE at CSU already has plans for a screening of Vessel and participation in their local bowl-a-thon this semester.

K-State’s FIRE Hosts Screening and Panel for the Documentary “The New Black”

Last month the Kansas State University chapter, FIRE, hosted a screening of “The New Black” in honor of Black history month.  The film discusses homosexuality in the black community and the influence of Christianity.  After the screening there was a panel that was led by the filmmaker, Yoruba Richen. The panel discussed the relationship between civil rights and marriage equality.  The event was co-sponsored with American Ethics Studies, Diversity Programming Council, DOW Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, and the English Department with over 200 students, faculty and staff in attendance.  

BGSU Chapter Raises $3,000 for Local Shelter

The Bowling Green State University chapter, FORCE, recently hosted their annual Vagina Monologues performance on campus over Valentine’s Day weekend. With 30 cast and crew members and 300 attendees over 4 nights, FORCE was able to fundraise $3,000 for the local domestic violence shelter. For the rest of the semester, they plan on continuing to uplift campus dialogue around the It’s On Us campaign recently introduced to campus, and to fight for an on-call Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner on campus. They will also be having a screening of After Tiller on campus with URGE in order to generate petition signatures against an upcoming abortion ban in Ohio.

University of Toledo kicks off new semester

The URGE chapter at University of Toledo, the University of Toledo Feminist Alliance, is excited for a new semester of activism on campus. They are currently doing auditions for they annual Vagina Monologues production, and recently hosted an event for Roe v. Wade on campus.

Heidelberg URGE chapter starting this semester

A new chapter is emerging at Heidelberg University in Ohio! They are currently in the early stages, and are identifying leaders for the fall. They are excited to start their first campaign about condom distribution on campus.

BGSU help Make Roe Real; Preparing for the Vagina Monologues

The Bowling Green State University chapter, FORCE, kicked off their semester with a celebration of Roe v. Wade. They made thank you cards for a local abortion clinic and made phone calls to their representatives about HR7. They are now preparing for their annual Vagina Monologues performances, where 20 cast members over 4 shows will perform Eve Ensler’s classic play.  

Stanford #BlackLivesMatter Walk Out

Black Student Union, Stanford organized a #BlackLivesMatter march/walk out in which URGE students participated in. Over 500 students participated and blocked two major intersections for 15 minutes. Afterwards, the chapter hosted a film screening of the Documentary “Out In the Night” which focused on the experiences of 4 Black, queer women facing sexual assault and the justice system.

BGSU Chapter creating dialogue on campus

The Bowling Green State University chapter, FORCE, has had a busy semester, creating change and dialogue on campus about reproductive justice. They held discussion on issues such as cultural appropriation, popular culture and feminism, and police brutality and anti-blackness. They also held their second Gender Neutral Sex Toy party. They also held their first Consent Workshop for BGSU’s Not in Our Town Week, dedicated to ending discrimination and building community on campus, in addition to their annual Take Back the Night, where 40 people attended. In addition, they completed their annual service project, Trick or Treat for the Cocoon Shelter, where they collected four grocery carts worth of donations for the domestic violence shelter. FSU takes on big issues!

Florida State University’s F-Word chapter has taken on some big issues this semester in their weekly discussion series. They ended off their semester with a conversation around ‘Black Feminism’, which capped off a semester full  of interesting topics such as ‘Western Perceptions of Islamic Feminism’, ‘Misogyny in US Military Culture’, ‘Femmephobia’, ‘Sex Ed in the US’, and even more!

Black Girls Rise at University of Alabama

UA Feminist Caucus hosted an event in collaboration with the National Council of Negro Women called “Black Girls Rise.” This panel-based event engaged students, faculty, and community members to have a discussion about the experiences of Black women in predominantly white institutions. Discussion followed about beauty standards, colorism, natural hair, and how Black women are sexually perceived by the culture. Upon entering the event, students would fill out a paper that said “I Rise Because _______,” as a demonstration that they are more than stereotypes.
